Luangwa Valley

Comprising two main areas, the North and South. The North being an incredibly remote wilderness area with just a couple of small and exciting bush camps, where walking safaris are the main activity. Lions, buffalo and hyena provide some spectacular sightings. The North combines well with a safari to the South Luangwa where there are a choice of stunning safari lodges and small (extremely comfortable) bush camps. Although better known than the North, this is still an uncrowded safari destination with simply amazing wildlife which you can encounter on game drives during the day and at night, also on walking safaris. The Luangwa river heaves with hippo, expect lots of elephants and a very good chance of some special leopard sightings often during the day and often hunting!

I would not hesitate to suggest the Luangwa for a first safari or for the most seasoned wildlife traveller/photographer. One benefit is it can be easily combined with other parts of Zambia. Here below are a choice of safaris but feel free to call to discuss other options or ideas for a tailored itinerary.

Tony McKeith (Founder) has managed bush camps in the South Luangwa and escorts small groups to the region.

The Robin Pope Safaris’ Mobile Walking Safaris 2017

Have long been known as the best wilderness experience of the South Luangwa.  After a night at Nkwali, your safari heads to the north of the park where you will walk for five days covering approximately 10km a day, following the Mupamadzi River. This clear river is a major tributary of the Luangwa.

The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ants to buffalo, a bird's nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush. The fully-serviced mobile camp is extremely comfortable and well-equipped with walk-in tents and full bedding. The shower is under a tree and the toilet is a bush loo with a wooden throne. Meals of a high standard are served under the open sky. A final night at Tena Tena or Nsefu completes the safari.

Now there are 7 night and 9 night options to choose from.

Dates available between June and end September 2017 & 2018
Some safari departures are already full, and so if you are interested please enquire soon.

Guest Comments:

"I wanted to send you a quick email to thank you for recommending Kafunta Lodge and Island Bush Camp.

We got back to Lusaka last evening after a wonderful stay. IBC is paradise!

We had three excellent guides Martin, Andrew and Ephy all so knowledgeable and such good company. After almost 20 years I had forgotten how magical the bush is.

The highlight was our walking safaris-the stillness and the small things pointed out by Andrew. We will go home with so many great memories. Everyone at the lodge and camp was so friendly and helpful. We knew that would be the case it is one of the special qualities of Zambia-the real Africa!"

This safari combines South Luangwa, the premier park in Zambia, and the pristine shores of Lake Malawi.

South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa, through which the meandering Luangwa River runs. The oxbow lagoons, woodland and plains of the valley host huge concentrations of game - including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo - and over 450 species of birds.

Pumulani on Nankumba Peninsula is recognised as one of the most beautiful shores of the Lake and borders Lake Malawi National Park. This Park was established in order to protect the cichlid fish unique to the area. In 1984 the park was designated a World Heritage Site.
