Blog - News ; Super Rare Melanistic Genet 'Not Spotted'

Busanga Safaris guests staying at Musekese camp as part of a safari in the Zambia's Kafue, who (coincidentally) were being guided by Tyrone McKeith. Were super lucky to see an incredibly rare Melanistic Genet. Possibly the first ever sighting in the region. Proof again that the Kafue National Park is an incredible wildlife destination. More species than any other African National Park and now proof that it is home to some of the rarest.

A Genet is an elusive and very active nocturnal creature which we see very often especially when game driving at night, but Melanism is an extremely rare generic aberration, basically the opposite of albinism, which means they are born black! (usually spotted) It is a very rare occurrence in nature. The chance of seeing this stunning little animal in that one tree, in that one thicket in the middle of the vast Kafue (Africa's 5th Largest park), in the dark was an exceptional bit of spotting, and our guests even managed to get a few photos.
