Borneo Wildlife Journey

A wildlife journey that uncovers northern Borneo's incredibly rich and varied wildlife. Featuring lowland and mountain rain forest rivers and even vast cave systems.

The species diversity of mammals and birds is incredible and beautiful and fascinating insects beyond counting. Orangutans will be a feature of this tour with the chance to meet young hand reared Orangutans at the Rasa Ria, (your first night in Borneo). As well as at the world renowned Sepilok sanctuary and with luck also wild Orangutan in the rain forrest. We also hope you will see Proboscis monkey along the channels of the Sukau river and who knows even Pygmy Elephants.
The Gomantong Bat caves will leave you speechless at there vast size and the sight and sound and smell of thousands or Bats and swifts that have roosted here for millennia. You will be walking amongst the rain forest trees and plants even walking high in the canopy where few people get to see. Birds - mammals - plants - trees - insects this is an exceptional wildlife journey.

Itinerary

Day 01
Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu airport, meet and transfer to Hotel Rasa Ria for overnight in a Garden room room giving time to acclimatise and relax after your journey.  The Rasa Ria is situated on a white sandy beach some distance from Kota Kinabalu town. It is an ideal place to stay in a comfortable room at a hotel with plenty of facilities. With the added benefit to visit the resort's very own nature reserve which is home to some young orang-utan being reared in preparation for introduction to Sepilok sanctuary and hopefully back in to the wild.
The Garden Wing offers rooms with views of the lush gardens and the sea. It is possible to add extra nights to relax and enjoy the Rasa Ria when you return from the wildlife tour.

Day 02
Today is a gentle introduction to the environment and flora of northern Borneo. Pick up from hotel and take a drive 2 hours overland (88 km) through paddy-fields and Dusun villages over the ridges of the Crocker Range to the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu at 5,000ft. A short stop at roadside stalls at Nabalu market to savour local fruits in season. At Kinabalu Park World Heritage Site, You will have time to visit the Education Centre and Mountain Garden, home to various species of the flowering Rhododendrons, carnivorous pitcher plants, rare orchids, ferns, oak trees and of course birds.
After which you will Continue 40 km overland journey to Poring. This is the site of a natural hot spring pools which you can try if you wish. The main reason to visit Poring thou is to explore tropical rainforest on foot with your guide, following the jungle trail leading to the treetop canopy walkways  suspended 41 meters across above the forest floor across giant Mengaris trees.  The views are really spectacular and get you level with the canopy for a rare and fascinating opportunity to see such and interesting an environment at first hand. After this afternoons walk you will return to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight at Rasa Ria. (B/L) 

Day 03
Pick up from hotel early in the morning and transfer to Kota Kinabalu airport for flight departure to Sandakan (MH2042/ETD:0700hrs or AK6092/ETD:0705hrs). On arrival at Sandakan Airport, You will be met by a driver / guide and transferred to the world renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. On arrival you can watch a short video show introduction before trekking off through the rainforest on wooden plank walks to witness the feeding of the orang utans usually at 1000hrs. When supplementary foods are put out to ensure especially the younger ones are eating well. The forrest is home to very many Orangutan which have been rescued or saved and are being re habituated to the wild, it is possible to encounter Orangutan on the walk ways to the feeding stations. There is simply no where else where you can witness so many of these beautiful apes in one place.
Lunch in Sandakan before proceeding before heading to a river jetty and continuing your journey on a relaxing cruise along Sabah's longest river, the Kinabatangan. Tonight you will stay at the  newly renovated multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge offers you the opportunity to view birds and wildlife along mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats.
Our guest have had some incredible wildlife sightings here including Pygmy Elephants and recently rare Leopard Cat as well as amazing Proboscis Monkey and totally wild Orangutan.

Enjoy a solar heated hot shower, candle light dinner overlooking the river and a slide show conducted by naturalist guide. After dinner an optional night safari cruise (at a surcharge) spotting nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds. Sukau Rainforest Lodge, named by National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2009 as one of the top 50 jungle lodges in the world. (B/L/D) 

Day 04
Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. A 0600hrs morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, proceed for an educational tour on the Hornbill Boardwalk located behind the lodge with our in-house naturalist. You have the option to visit the 65 acres Kinabatangan Wildlife Corridor Regeneration Program (KWICORP) site to learn about reforestation of degraded riverine reserve. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 05
Today after breakfast your wildlife journey continues with a boat journey to your vehicle and a 27 km drive through rural borneo to the Gomantong Caves. This is an awe inspiring cave system is reached by trek 20 minutes through the rainforest to the cave entrance. Your guide will brief you on the cave fauna including bats, swiftlets and crabs among others and their contribution to maintaining a balanced ecology and significance to the local economy. When in season, witness the collecting of birds' nests by the local people using bamboo ladders and poles. The sheer size of the caves is incredible as is the smell and sight that awaits you as you move thru the cave on walkways.

From Gomantong you will proceed a further 2 hours overland to Lahad Datu for lunch, Drive 83km through selectively logged forest, cocoa and soft-wood plantations before arriving in the critically important Danum Vally eco system where you will be staying at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge beside Danum River on the edge of 438 sq. km of undisturbed lowland rainforest. The Lodge is cleverly designed and deep in the rain forrest, where the sounds of birds and animals resonate  all day and night, the area is home to the full range of Sabah's lowland fauna, including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Elephants, Clouded Leopards, and Orang Utans. So far some 275 species of birds have been recorded in the area. You will have time to explore the nature trail and nearby river. In the evening a slide show and if weather permits we go spotlighting to view some of the nocturnal animals. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 06
Early morning bird walk before breakfast. Spend the whole day exploring the forest for birds and mammals, leading up to an escarpment with ancient burial coffins. Trek to waterfall for refreshing dip in rock pools. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, explore more trails leading to canopy walkway. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 07
Morning Trek in search of mammals and birds, Return to the Lodge before departing for Lahad Datu. Take the afternoon flight back to Kota Kinabalu (flight MH3019/ETD:1545hrs). (B/L)

Day 02
