Full Safari Details
'Miombo' Northern Kafue Safari

Welcome to Zambia.

Your safari will take you on a journey, uncovering the incredibly varied wildlife that exists amongst the shady Miombo woodlands on the seasonal Oxbow lagoons (knows as ‘Dambos’), along the clear waters of the Kafue River and on the breathtaking vastness of the Busanga Plains.
From the moment you arrive in each camp with your escorting guide, your hosts and their safari teams will greet you with very warm and genuine Zambian hospitality and you can expect to feel completely spoilt.

The Kafue is justifiably emerging as a key destination for a safari to Zambia. Home to possibly the most varied wildlife of any African Park and yet with still just a few safari camps. Meeting other visitors is rare and having the bush to yourself is wonderful.
We will be on safari during the dry season and hope to encounter the Kafue’s many and diverse antelope species which includes; Roan, Sable, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Puku, Oribi and Red Lechwe to name just a few. Predators are thriving, with a healthy population of Lions spread across the Kafue. Leopards stalk the shadows in the woodland, Cheetah and Serval often seen on the plains and clearings. Wild dogs are here and although they remain a hard spot, sightings increase as the dry season passes.

Birds are a big part of any Kafue safari, with an impressive list of over 500 species. There are at least two endemics, and lots of small colourful species from Kingfishers and Finches to Turaco’s and many large raptors.

You will be staying at thee authentic safari camps, Musekese Bush Camp,  The Plains Camp and Kaingu River Lodge. Each camp is in very different habitat, all are hidden away in remote locations. Comfort levels are high and you will charmed by the surroundings, but also by the dedicated teams who will do their best to make you feel at home in the bush. Time in camp between forays in to the bush is a chance to just relax and enjoy the company of your fellow guests and hosts.

Your escorting guide (Tony McKeith) will be on hand through out to ensure you get the most from your safari, working with the resident guides in camp, using their current information on game movements and their bush skills to generate as many great wildlife sightings as we can.

You will never not be truly in the bush, there are no fences and game comes in to camp frequently, and so there is always something to see so keep you cameras handy.

You will experience the bush in a variety of ways. Game Drives in open vehicles during the early part of the day and in the afternoon making the most of the best light.  Afternoon game drives stay out until after dark to search out nocturnal species, not easy photography conditions but a great way to end a day in the bush. You can also experience productive River Safaris in stable purpose built boats, on gentle Walking Safaris and sitting in viewing blinds letting the wildlife come to you.

Day 1
24 hours before hand you can visit Emirate Airlines website www.emirates.com  to check in on line. Click the Manage Booking page and using your reference
. You are scheduled to depart from London first to Dubai, departing from Terminal 3 at 20.40, and onwards to Lusaka, arriving the following day at 14.35. Please make sure your bags are labeled all the way to Lusaka.

Day 2
On arrival you will be met by a representative of Tours Africa,
this is Busanga Safaris agent at the airport. Tours Africa will hold a board with your name on it, and will be standing just before you pass through immigration.
Although Lusaka is a friendly and safe Airport, Tours Africa will guide you to the best queue.
You are now on Africa Time and immigration can be a slow process, but don’t worry you are not in a rush. You can pay your visa fee at the passport control desk ($50pp), no need for a pre arranged visa.
When you have your bags, our representative will take you to meet Tony and a driver from Pioneer Camp. The drive to Pioneer will take around 20 mins. Situated in a rural area near Lusaka. Pioneer is a very friendly informal lodge, full of character and a great place to get over the flight and get in tune with Africa, the trees in camp attract lots of colourful birds.
We have booked you an ensuite cottage for tonight. We will meet other guests here and have time to relax and enjoy Dinner .

Day 3 & 4

Today is an early start, with breakfast on the patio, we will meet our driver from Kaingu, who will settle us in to a comfortable vehicle before setting off at around 06.30 to the Kafue.
The journey first passes through bustling Lusaka City.
The scene gradually changes as the city gives way to villages and farmland as we head west towards the Kafue National Park.
The journey typically taking around 5 1/2 hours, stopping along the way for refreshments.  A few hours in to the drive, and we reach the Nulasanga Gate boundary of the Kafue National Park where habitation by people disappears. We remain on tarmac until eventually turning of on to graded tracks.
Having reached a point by the Kafue River we will leave our vehicle and continue by boat for the last 20mins of the journey to reach Kaingu. The boat journey is a pleasant assault on the senses, as the startling beauty of the river and the sight of Hippos and birds begins to sink in.
Having been welcomed by the camps owner/managers, and have familiarised you with your surroundings, and settled in to your chalet there will be time for a relaxed lunch on the deck.

The safari really begins at Kaingu. For the next two nights you will stay in a luxury tented style chalet facing directly on to the river.     Being here in is a chance to unwind after your journey. The habitat around camp is a mixture of riverine woodland and bush. Our stay here will focus on enjoying the river and may be taking a gentle walking safari to one of the giant rock Kopje’s which dot the bush in this areas. These massive rocks provide a fantastic way to get a feel for the vast wilderness you are in.

The next day after an early light break fast, we will offer to arrange  your choice of activity, possibly a combination of a walk and a river safari, either by boat or a more adventurous canoe safari.
Both give an eye level view of the river where there is chance of encountering many birds but also Elephant and Hippo and may be even a Leopard coming to drink. We will spend  3 or 4 hours in the bush in the morning before returning to camp for lunch, then after  a few hours down time and obligatory tea and cake! We will  set off again exploring. Days generally end with a cold drink as the sun sets over the bush, then with time to freshen up and enjoy dinner which like all meals are enjoyed with your fellow guests and guides.

Days 5 - 6 & 7
Today our safari begins in earnest. Moving north, we will journey on an extended game drive to the Busanga Plains. Following the path of the Kafue and then Lufupa rivers we will pass through a variety of bush types, this journey can take 5 + hours, generating interesting sights as the bush changes from woodland to semi open Savannah to emerge on to the Busanga plains. This is an adventurous drive in an open game drive vehicle with a shade roof. We will stop on route for breaks and a pic nic lunch.
The Plains Camp a small classic and very comfortable bush camp sitting on a beautiful island of palms in the middle of this vast ecosystem with uninterrupted views of the surrounding plans.
Your home at Plains Camp will be a spacious Meru style safari tent with an open bush bathroom. Expect warm bucket showers and flush toilets (with a great view).
Meals are enjoyed with your guides and other guests in the main boma where most meals are served. Big settees are a perfect place to relax and take in the ever changing view on the Busanga and absorb the sounds of tropical Bulbuls in the great old fig tree.
Game drives will be our main activity on the plains as distances are quite big.  Typically game drives last around 4 hours, and leave camp at dawn after a light breakfast, usually returning to camp at the hottest part of the day for Lunch. We venture out again in the late afternoon, staying out until darkness draws out the nocturnal species, which we continue to search for with the aid of a spotlight. Lions are very active here and the sounds at night wafting through the walls of your tent are magical.
Tony and the team will keep you safe and will brief you at each camp but please don't be tempted to walk around at night as the Lions pass through camp very often at night and Hippo are also often found grazing between the tents.
Your guides on the plains are amongst the most knowledgeable and skilled guides who know this place intimately  and will have current knowledge on interesting animal movements and will do there very best to help us to get the most from our visit to the plains.

Days 8 - 9 & 10
After three nights on the Busanga we head south across the plains, retracing your route on an extended and often productive game drive in the Musanza and Chibembe areas, to the confluence on the Lufupa and Kafue rivers. Here we rendezvous with a boat from Musekese to begin the next part of your safari.
The drive to Musekese takes around 4 1/2 hours. Heading south from the Busanga. retracing our tracks part of the way. This drive can generate good sightings.

Eventually we reach the confluence of the Lufupa and Kafue Rivers, and close by you will meet with a boat from Musekese which we will use to cross the Kafue River to reach Musekese.

This season Musekese Camp has undergone a change and you will be accommodated in one of just four newly created bush chalets. Made from local materials and tastefully decorated in an understated safari style. They are open fronted but enclosed with mozi nets at night and face directly on to a large open area (dambo).
Each chalet  has a private deck offering total peace and privacy.
Imaginative ensuite bathrooms have warm bucket showers and porcelain flushing loo’s, combining safari chic with an authentic safari feel.
Camp centres around the ‘boma’ deck which is a great spot to simply relax between activities and enjoy the view as well as the company of your fellow guests and guides. You will be hosted by Tyrone Mckeith and/or Phil Jeffery at Musekese. Both honorary Zambian wildlife officers, highly regarded guides who contribute time and skills to wildlife conservation in the Kafue.

Having been welcomed by the team and settled in to your chalet you will be able to take a first foray into the bush.
After enjoying the beautiful evening light, its back to camp for dinner and  your first night at Musekese, serenaded by the soothing sounds of the African night.
When Tyrone and Phil first found this previously unknown area during walking expeditions, they immediately christened it ‘Eden’, a very big open dambo which stays wet all year and is full of life.
There can be hundreds of antelope in view. Elephant’s love the dambo too, migrating daily between the dry bush and the wet mud areas on the Dambo. The ariel image (following page) shows the ‘Eden’ dambo. Musekese Camp is hidden in the Island of trees between the woodland on the left and the wet areas, beyond is the strip of riverine woodland along the main Kafue.
We are aware of two Lion prides in the area, and in June this year your guides found the ‘Kamsot Pride’ had some new cubs which we hope to encounter on our safari. There are at least two mature males which move between the prides, and the occasional interloper.
The bush holds a great diversity of species including many of the varied antelope species the park is known for. Cheetah occur here, as do Serval, Honey badger, abnormally large herds of Impala and numerous other equally interesting species. Birding in the wood land  contrast to the Plains and adds an interesting dimension to your safari.
Tyrone and Phil have created several driving tracks leading from camp providing options to really explore woodland and clearings. Camp is a stones throw from the Kafue River. Camp has two purpose built  safari boats, which can produce some good Leopard sightings, chance of seeing Elephants crossing and so much more.

Musekese has a viewing blind a short distance from camp so that it is easily accessible, but far enough from camp to be appealing to game.

Day 11
Today after a relaxed breakfast and time to bid farewell to the team at Musekese.
We will drive back to Lusaka airport. Taking a packed lunch and stopping on route. We may head to Pioneer to freshen up before heading to the airport  in time to catch your flight to Dubai and onwards to London. Scheduled to depart at 21.25.

We sincerely hope you have had a fantastic safari experince, and that you travel home with camera cards full of great photos and memories to last a lifetime.
